If you travel as a stranger through Ulan-Bator, you will notice a variety of patterns from different epochs that manifest themselves on various objects in the room creating strong contrasts. It is not just about the appearance of traditional clothing styles, such as colorful and patterned silk fabrics, that is striking in a modern city. An intense aesthetic impression is also spread by the influences of western building market aesthetics, such as marble imitation, clinker imitation or wood imitation, which are found in private and public buildings. The patterns used here are metaphorical for certain cultures and specific political periods and influences. They form a peculiar space of non-verbal communication. In the focal point visual communication / object and space, we will deal with patterns and their sociological-symbolic meanings. The lectures and practical exercises of the students should deal with questions of collective visual communication within a group as well as the need for their own identity. Developing or analyzing a pattern means thinking about connections and boundaries, be it in artistic expression or performative actions. In the workshop, an artistic-conceptual approach to design as a creative method will be practiced. This creativity and design process is located in design theory, in particular in the "research-by-design" approach of Alan Findeli.
