Exchange semester for freemovers (no partnership between universities)

Application process: step by step

Step 1: Application deadlines

  • Application deadline winter semester: May 15th
  • Application deadline summer semester: November 15th

Step 2: Applications from non-EU citizens

Non-EU citizens have to inform themselves about entry and residence regulations and apply for them at the German embassy if necessary. Proof of financial resources (usually 720 Euro per month) and proof of health insurance are also required. Further information and the addresses of the German embassies can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.

Step 3: Application

After your university has nominated you, you must complete the following application documents and send them to us:

  • Student Application Form
  • Learning Agreement Form for Freemover (Form to list the courses you want to attend in the Design department)
  • Transcript of records
  • Letter of motivation (German or English)
  • CV including a photo (German or English)
  • Proof of language proficiency (knowledge of the language of instruction should be at least level B1 of the European reference framework CEFR). The language of instruction, unless otherwise stated, is German. However, most teachers and students speak fluent English and are happy to provide additional explanations and instructions in English and to switch to English whenever required.

Please note that you and the coordinator of your home university have to sign both your "student application" and the "learning agreement".

You can find all the required forms to download in the right column on this page.

Step 4: Costs during the stay

During your studies, you have to think about the following additional expenses: semester fee, housing costs, health insurance, radio fee, food, mobile phone contract and private expenses for your leisure activities. Generally you need at least 800 € per month. You can find more information about the costs here.

Freemovers are obliged to take care of their accommodation for their stay at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences. A lot of helpful information can be found on the website of the International Office.
