“She was never afraid of men,” says Petra Kelly in voiceover, “Thank God!” Nevertheless, her appearances in the Bundestag were torturous for her because of the chauvinistic hostility present there. The camera then shows the front rows of the plenary chamber, where the men of the parliamentary groups to the right of the Greens act like hooligans during her speech. This scene clearly demonstrates that even before the AfD entered parliament, the German parliament was not a haven of civilized political discourse. Moreover, targeted hate campaigns against women in politics, with sexist and anti-Semitic hostility, were already flourishing before the internet and social media, as various reports and archived hate mail reveal in all their severity. Petry Kelly's “legacy” is less her personal story than the “seeds she planted in the world,” says “Friday for Future” spokeswoman Luisa Neubauer in the film: the combination of disarmament, anti-nuclear activism, ecology, feminism, and human rights on a global scale, which she learned during her youth in the US. The film “Petra Kelly – Act Now!” (directed by Doris Metz, produced by Birgit Schulz) finally does justice to "the co-founder of the Green Party, the symbolic figure of the peace and anti-nuclear movement, who left behind more than 150 meters of archive material. It brings Petra Kelly back into our fragmented present as a visionary who had too little time.“
The film was awarded the German Film Prize in the category ”Best Documentary" in 2025.
