From Stage to Spatial Performance

Between Algorithm and Imagination

How does theatre change when the stage and the auditorium merge? Drawing on his own work, Sebastian Hannak demonstrates how his spatial stages (“Raumbühnen”) create new spaces for experience and what role digital tools play in this process. The lecture invites us to rethink scenography as an open, experimental medium.

With the dissolution of the classical proscenium stage, multi-perspective experiential spaces evolve in which the audience, performers, and environment enter into a dynamic relationship with one another.

Scenography is understood in this context as a research-based practice that explores new forms of artistic processes to generate new forms of perception, narration, and participation. Drawing on his work, Hannak demonstrates how theatrical space evolves when both stage and audience, as well as algorithm and imagination, converge.

Examples also illustrate how virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence and screens expand the aesthetic experience. The result is a theatre as an open, transformable space that constantly reformulates itself and continually enables new ways of experiencing, as demonstrated by his new theatre building INTERIM from 2025.
