Abstract

Multilingual typography – a political and design-specific challenge

Although multilingual media seem like a rather contemporary term at first glance, they have marginally appeared in the context of many ancient cultures. We meet them wherever speakers of different languages and members of different cultures or communities are publicly addressed to by one and the same governmental institution, as well as in situations of multilateral communication—inclusion and discrimination are often difficult to separate. Besides an overview of the phenomenon, we will take a look at the mechanisms and practical design problems of multilingual typography with a partial focus on the world of Chinese chatacters.

Multilinguale Typografie – eine politische wie gestalterische Herausforderung

Auch wenn der Begriff multilingualer Medien auf den ersten Blick eher zeitgenössisch wirkt, erschienen diese marginal bereits im Kontext vieler alter Kulturen. Sie tauchen dort auf wo Menschen unterschiedlicher Sprachen sowie Angehörige verschiedener Kultur und Community öffentlich durch ein und dieselbe Regierungsinstitution angesprochen werden sollen, wie auch in Situationen multilateraler Kommunikation – Inklusion und Diskriminierung sind dabei oft schwer voneinander trennbar. Neben einem Überblick über das Phänomen werden wir einen Blick auf die Mechanismen und Gestaltungsprobleme von und mit multilingualer Typografie werfen und dabei teilweise den Fokus auf die Welt der chinesischen Zeichen setzen.

Bio

Roman studied visual communication at Burg Giebichenstein Halle University of Art and Design and typeface design at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts. He was a member of the Multilingual Typography Research Group led by Prof. Ruedi Baur at Zurich University of the Arts. A fluent Chinese speaker, he has spent lots of his professional life in Asia. In 2018 and 2019, he was a substitute professor of typography at Braunschweig University of Arts. Right now he works as an information designer at the German Institute of Economic Research (DIW Berlin) besides teaching typography at Berlin University of the Arts.

Roman Wilhelm studierte visuelle Kommunikation an der Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle sowie Schriftgestaltung an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig. Er war Mitglied der Forschungsgruppe Multilinguale Typografie an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (geleitet durch Prof. Ruedi Baur). Seine Kenntnisse in chinesischer Sprache und Schrift führten ihn zu zahlreichen beruflichen Aufenthalten in Asien. Von 2018 bis 2019 vertrat er die Professur für Typografie an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. Inzwischen arbeitet er als Informationsdesigner am Deutschen Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (DIW Berlin) und unterrichtet Typografie an der Universität der Künste Berlin.
