In this lecture series, you can look forward to a presentation by photographer Dominik Asbach:
Dominik Asbach, born in Essen in 1972, is a German photographer specializing in portrait and reportage photography. From 1993 to 1996, he received training as a photographer in Mülheim an der Ruhr, and from 1996 to 2002, he studied photography at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund.
Since the summer of 2000, he has been working as a freelance photographer for clients such as Stern, Spiegel, 11Freunde, SZ Magazin, and Die Zeit. In addition to his editorial work, he also photographs in the corporate sector for clients such as Henkel, Thyssenkrupp, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Deutsche Bank, Rewe, and AOK.
He has been a member of the Cologne-based agency Laif since 2007.
Asbach's photographic focus in his freelance work is often on the Ruhr region, which he considers his home and creative playground. In his series "Glanz, Gesocks & Gloria" (Glitz, Scum & Glory), he portrays authentic characters from the Ruhr area who often appear inconspicuous in their everyday lives but become dazzling personalities in their free time. This work has been exhibited at the Leica Gallery in Zingst, among other places.
His work has been shown in several group exhibitions, including at the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr ("Über Tage," 2010), and the Ludwiggalerie Schloss Oberhausen ("Green City," 2015). Asbach has also received various awards, including the Bridges Photo Prize from the Emschergenossenschaft in 2005 and 2008.
