„Für mich bedeutet Feminismus Teilhabe am aktiven Formen der Gesellschaft, ein Anzweifeln hegemonialer Systeme und gleichzeitig der Mut zur Veränderung. Im Falle meines Langzeitprojektes “Resurface: A Stolen History” bedeutete dies, dass ich den Blick zurück auf die Vergangenheit richte und hinterfrage, wie und anhand welcher Variablen (Kunst-)Geschichtsschreibung entstanden und heute zu verändern ist.“

In ihren Arbeiten verbindet Johanna Reich Malerei, Performance und Video oftmals zu installativen Werken, welche die Medien, die sie verwendet, hinterfragen. Viele ihrer Arbeiten entstehen auf der Grundlage mehrjähriger Recherchen, in denen die Künstlerin Lücken in der Geschichte, komplexe Hintergründe des Codens wie den undurchsichtigen Einfluss von Datenbanken auf die Entwicklung von Algorithmen und die damit einhergehende Bildproduktion, untersucht und verändert. 

Inhaltlich dreht sich ihre Arbeit um An- und Abwesenheit, Entmaterialisierung und Verschwinden, das Sichtbare und das Unsichtbare: Wer sind wir und was prägt unsere Identität? Was macht einen Menschen aus? Welche Spuren hinterlassen wir an dem Ort, an dem wir leben? 

Johanna Reich lebt und arbeitet in Köln. Sie wurde u. a. mit dem japanischen Excellence Prize for Media Arts, dem Konrad-von-Soest-Preis und dem Nam June Paik Advancement Award ausgezeichnet. Ihre Arbeiten sind in zahlreichen internationalen Ausstellungen wie zum Beispiel im Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, im Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, im Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, im Palais de Tokyo, Paris sowie in Sammlungen des Museum Ludwig Köln, der Sammlung Goetz, München, oder der Jerry Speyer Collection, New York, vertreten.  

Von 2020-22 hatte sie eine Gastprofessur an der Akademie der bildenden Künste München inne, sie lebt und arbeitet in Köln.

"For me, feminism means participation in the active shaping of society, a questioning of hegemonic systems, and at the same time, the courage to change. In the case of my long-term project "Resurface: A Stolen History," this meant looking back at the past and questioning how and on the basis of which variables (art) historiography came into being and is to be changed today." 

JOHANNA REICH

In her work, Johanna Reich often combines painting, performance, and video to create installation-based works that question the media she uses. Many of her works are based on several years of research, in which the artist investigates and alters gaps in history, complex backgrounds of code, such as the opaque impact of databases on the development of algorithms and the image production that accompanies them.  

In terms of content, her work revolves around presence and absence, dematerialization and disappearance, the visible and the invisible: who are we, and what shapes our identity? What makes a person? What traces do we leave behind in the place where we live? 

Johanna Reich lives and works in Cologne. She has been awarded the Japanese Excellence Prize for Media Arts, the Konrad von Soest Prize, and the Nam June Paik Advancement Award, among others. Her work has been included in numerous international exhibitions, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and collections at Museum Ludwig Cologne; Sammlung Goetz, Munich; and the Jerry Speyer Collection, New York.
