Konzeption und Entwurf der Buchreihe Hatje Cantz TEXT

Im Frühjahr 2020 beschloss die Verlagsleitung von Hatje Cantz (Berlin) eine Buchreihe ins Leben zu rufen, die sich „Text und Bild, den vielfältigen Stimmen der Kunst und der kuratorischen Praxis widmet“ (Verlagsprogramm Hatje Cantz ). 

Einige Monate später erschienen die ersten Bände, die sehr positiv rezensiert wurden. Seitdem sind über zwanzig Titel mit Texten zur Kunst, Kultur, Architektur und Fotografie in deutscher sowie englischer Sprache erschienen. Nach der Entwicklung eines Reihenkonzepts betreue ich seither den Entwurf aller Bände. 

Im Rahmen des Vortrags möchte ich den gesamten Prozess und die unterschiedlichen Aspekte dieser seltenen, anspruchsvollen und für mich besonders reizvollen Aufgabe vorstellen: von den ersten Überlegungen bis zur gedruckten Buchseite. Eine der interessantesten Herausforderungen besteht darin, dass mit jedem Titel neue Inhalte und redaktionelle Konzepte versammelt sind, auf die ich – im Rahmen der Reihe – mit jeweils angemessenen Lösungen und frischen Ansätzen reagiere.

Im Spannungsfeld zwischen Einheit und Interpretation ist so ein großes Repertoire an Entwurfsvarianten entstanden. Dabei geht es weniger um „große Gesten“ als um behutsam gewählte typografische Lösungen. Womöglich erst auf den zweiten Blick erkennbar, haben diese einen signifikanten Einfluss auf Inhalt, Erzählweise und Rezeption.

((Kurzbiografie))

Der Typograf und Buchentwerfer Neil Holt studierte Design an der FH Köln (Kölner Modell) sowie Typografie/ Buchkunst bei Prof. Walter Nikkels an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In der Klasse des renommierten Typografen war er mehrere Jahre als Assistent tätig.

Nach seinem Studium gründete Neil Holt in Köln ein Studio mit dem Schwerpunkt Buchentwurf für den kulturellen Bereich. Seither hat er zahlreiche Ausstellungskataloge, Kunst- und Textbände für namhafte Institutionen, Verlage und Künstler im In- und Ausland entworfen.

Solange er praktisch tätig ist, beschäftigt Neil Holt sich mit großem Interesse mit der Theorie und Entwicklung der Typografie und Buchgestaltung. Er unterrichtet, forscht und schreibt - immer an der Schnittstelle zu anderen künstlerischen Disziplinen, insbesondere der Bildenden Kunst, Architektur und Fotografie und in Korrelation mit der entwerferischen Praxis. Als Herausgeber und Autor wirkte er, unter anderem, an einem umfangreichen Fachbuch mit: Papier. Material, Medium und Faszination (Prestel)

Concept and design of the book series Hatje Cantz TEXT

((Abstract))

In the spring of 2020, the publishing management of Hatje Cantz (Berlin) decided to launch a book series dedicated to "text and image, the diverse voices of art and curatorial practice" (Hatje Cantz publishing program ). 

The first volumes were published and received highly positive reviews a few months later. Since then, more than twenty titles with texts on art, culture, architecture, and photography have been published in German and English. After developing a series concept, I have since supervised the design of all volumes. 

During the lecture, I would like to present the entire process and the different aspects of this rare, demanding, and, for me, particularly appealing task: from the first considerations to the printed book page. One of the most exciting challenges is that with each title, new content and editorial concepts are gathered, to which I respond - within the framework of the series - with appropriate solutions and fresh approaches in each case.

In the tension between unity and interpretation, an extensive repertoire of design variants has thus emerged. It is less about "grand gestures" than about carefully chosen typographic solutions. Although they may only be recognizable at a second glance, they significantly influence content, narrative, and reception.

((short biography))

Typographer and book designer Neil Holt studied design at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences (Cologne Model) and typography/book art with Prof. Walter Nikkels at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He worked as an assistant in the class of the renowned typographer for several years.

After his studies, Neil Holt founded a studio in Cologne focusing on book design for the cultural sector. Since then, he has designed numerous exhibition catalogs and art and text volumes for renowned institutions, publishers, and artists in Germany and abroad.

For as long as he has been in practice, Neil Holt has been engaged with great interest in the theory and development of typography and book design. He teaches, researches, and writes-always at the interface with other artistic disciplines, especially the visual arts, architecture, and photography, and in correlation with design practice. As editor and author, he contributed, among other things, to a comprehensive reference book: Paper. Material, Medium, and Fascination (Prestel).
